Abstract

|
Chlamydia trachomatis has emerged as one of the most common sexually transmitted pathogens. It has been implicated as a cause of a variety of genital tract infections in both men and women. It has also been shown to produce inclusion conjunctivitis and pneumonia in the newborn.
In a clinical study of 450 cases with suspected Chlamydial infection, Chlamydia trachomatis inclusions were sought in cycloheximide-treated McCort-ells by a conventional iodine staining method. Of 450 specimens tested, there was a 14.0 %, 4.8 %, and 2.8 % correlation of positive results for non-gonococcal urethritis, cervicitis and conjunctivitis, respectively. Among 228 urethral, 186 cervical and 36 conjunctival specimens tested, the total positive rate was 9.3%.
